Bedtime story subscriptions: what to check before you sign up

A bedtime story subscription gives you new stories for a regular fee, as books in the post, audio in an app, or stories written for your child to read aloud. Before you sign up, check what you get each month, how it renews, how to cancel and what you keep afterwards.

The main types

What to check before you subscribe

  1. What you get each month. How many books or stories, for how many children, and whether there is a limit.
  2. Free stories or a trial. What you can try without paying, whether a trial applies to you, and the date it turns into a paid plan.
  3. How it renews. Most subscriptions renew automatically. Note the renewal date and the price after any offer ends.
  4. How to cancel. App Store subscriptions are cancelled in your Apple account settings, not in the app. Book boxes usually have their own cut-off date before the next dispatch.
  5. What you keep if you stop. Books in the post are yours. With apps, check whether saved stories stay readable after the subscription ends.
  6. Who holds the screen. If a phone is involved, decide whether it is your reading tool or something your child watches.
  7. What you share. For personalised stories, share interests and favourite things rather than surnames, addresses or schools.
  8. Adverts and extras. Look for an app without adverts or purchases aimed at children.

Where Story Nest fits

Story Nest is a personalised read-aloud app for iPhone and iPad. You can try three free stories for one child without a subscription. Nest Plus is bought and managed through Apple, renews automatically unless cancelled, and shows its plans, prices and any eligible trial before you subscribe. Your saved stories remain yours to read, even if your subscription ends. Story Nest has no advertising.

Questions parents ask

Is a bedtime story subscription worth it?

It can be if you would use it most nights and it suits how your family reads. Use any free stories or trial first, and check what you keep if you stop paying.

How do I cancel a subscription bought in the App Store?

Subscriptions bought through the App Store are managed in your Apple account’s subscription settings, not by the app maker. Cancel there before the renewal date to avoid the next payment.

Do I need a subscription to use Story Nest?

No. You can try three free stories for one child without a subscription. Nest Plus, bought through Apple, keeps the stories going; the available plans and prices are shown in the app before you subscribe.

What happens to my Story Nest stories if I cancel?

Your saved stories remain yours to read, even if your subscription ends.
